Hamish Findlay
Hamish has five years experience working in technology commercialisation, intellectual property management and creating startup companies. During this time he has negotiated and finalised a number of licenses with international and local companies and has been involved in the formation of three start-up businesses. As part of his role at Otago Innovation, Hamish spent the last three years managing Photonic Innovations. Previously, Hamish consulted to a number of well-known Australasian companies in marketing strategy, research and business planning. Hamish is a member of the NZ Institute of Directors and the International Licensing Executives Society.
Hamish has a BCom in Management, BA and MA (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Auckland and a Diploma for Graduates in Accounting from the University of Otago.
Cal Maclean
A physics and electronics graduate of Edinburgh's Napier and Heriot-Watt Universities, Cal has over twenty years experience developing businesses, including holding executive positions in R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Marketing and General Management, which have entailed the development and global sales of over one hundred products. Cal's career includes thirteen years developing Hewlett-Packard business units in the UK, the US and Australia, and during his tenure was twice asked by HP Executive Management to relocate and lead new operations, which in less than five years achieved revenues of $70M and $240M respectively. Following this, Cal used his knowledge of the efficiencies of outsourcing to Asia to found his own global supply chain startup, which gained many blue chip customers and generated approximately US$25M in retail sales in under three years.
Andrew Wilson
Andrew Wilson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Otago. Andrew's primary expertise is in the production, manipulation and investigation of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). He is the principal investigator of the (Marsden-funded) Bose-Einstein condensates experiment group at Otago and has also held positions at Oxford University. His current research programme is in the areas of atom optics and interferometry, atom laser development, cold collisions, and ultra cold molecules.
Dr Wilson's applied research, which is the basis of Photonic Innovations' intellectual property, was initially motivated by interest from Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Ltd, where he provided advice and measurements on laser detection of respiratory gases.
Brian McMath
Brian McMath has over thirty years experience in various roles with NZIG and BOC, including General Manager. Brian has in-depth domain knowledge of industrial uses of gases and detection needs. In addition, Brian has an interest in new technologies and business development, and this has been the focus of his activities since leaving BOC. He also is involved in a number of FRST R & D projects.
